Piano Movers Serving the Bay Area

Moving a piano is not like moving furniture. Whether you own a delicate baby grand, an upright, or a vintage concert instrument, a single misstep can cause thousands of dollars in damage, or worse, an injury. Sweet Sound Piano is a piano moving company working across the Bay Area for over 30 years, serving clients in Oakland, San Jose, Livermore, and the surrounding communities.

Why Choose Sweet Sound Piano for Your Move

Piano moving is a specialty skill. Sweet Sound has been doing it for over 30 years, and we treat it that way. Every move is handled by trained technicians who understand the structural sensitivities of the instrument — the soundboard, the plate, the action — and how weight distribution, stairways, and tight corners affect the risk of damage.

What sets us apart:
• Specialized equipment for uprights, grands, and player pianos
• Experienced two- and three-person move crews
• Interior padding, piano boards, and climate-aware transport
• Careful handling on stairs, elevators, and narrow entryways
•
Piano moving service from first call to final placement

Local and Long-Distance Piano Moving

Whether you’re relocating across town or across the state, we have the equipment and experience to get your piano there safely. Our local Bay Area piano moving service includes in-home repositioning, apartment and condo moves, and piano delivery from dealers or private sellers. For long-distance piano transport, we coordinate the full logistics so your instrument arrives in the same condition it left.

How the Piano Moving Process Works

  1. Contact us to describe your piano, pickup location, and destination.
  2. We assess the move requirements and provide a clear quote.
  3. Our technicians arrive with the right equipment for your specific instrument.
  4. Your piano is secured, transported, and placed exactly where you want it.
  5. We recommend scheduling a tuning after the move — we can handle that too.

How to Prepare for Piano Moving Day

A little preparation on your end makes the move faster, safer, and less stressful for everyone. Here’s what we recommend before our team arrives:

  • Clear a path. Remove rugs, furniture, and obstacles between the piano and the exit route, including doorways, hallways, and stairwells.
  • Measure tight spots. If you have narrow doorways, low ceilings, or a staircase with a landing, let us know in advance. We’ll plan the right approach before we show up.
  • Notify your building. For apartment and condo moves, reserve the elevator and check if your building requires a certificate of insurance from the moving company.
  • Secure the fallboard and lid. Close and latch the keyboard cover. For grands, we’ll handle lid removal as part of our process.
  • Note the destination placement. Have a clear idea of where the piano is going in the new space. Avoid exterior walls, heating vents, and direct sunlight — all affect tuning stability.

If you’re unsure about anything, contact us before the move date. We’re happy to walk you through it.

Upright vs. Grand Piano Moving: What's Different

Not all piano moves are the same. The type of instrument you own directly affects the equipment, crew size, and approach required.

Upright pianos are tall and heavy — most weigh between 300 and 800 pounds — but they remain intact during the move. They’re lifted onto a piano board, secured with straps, and wheeled to the truck. Stairs and tight turns are the main variables that affect complexity and cost.

Baby grand and grand pianos require partial disassembly before the move. The legs and pedal lyre are removed, the lid is taken off, and the body is placed on its side on a padded piano board. This process takes more time and requires technicians who know the instrument’s structural tolerances. Reassembly and leveling happen at the destination.

Concert grands are the most demanding moves we handle — often exceeding 1,000 pounds, with additional considerations for floor load capacity and access at both ends of the move.

Regardless of instrument type, the goal is the same: your piano arrives undamaged, in tune as possible, and exactly where you want it.

We get Sweet Sound piano to tune our piano every year. We have an early 1900's upright piano that had just recently also needed some rework around the felt. In every case, tuning, repair, scheduling and follow-up, Sweet Sound has been a fantastic team to work with. They are professional, clear about what is going on, on-time, effective at the tuning/repairs, and clearly communicate what is going on with the instrument whenever I have questions. It is a pleasure to work with them to get the equipment serviced. I can only wish it was this easy for all house maintenance work! A big Thank You to the Sweet Sound team for the consistently great work.

I can't say enough good things about Sweet Sound! My piano is 140 years old - a "senior citizen" as Jim said. But apparently, it was high end in its day. He brought life into it by taking out the entire action mechanism, fixing the moisture problem at all the center pins, and filing, reshaping, and steaming the hammers. Then, of course he re-tuned. The resulting sound is remarkable! It’s got a new life. And the feel of the keys – so much easier to play! I can feel the subtlety, and my enjoyment of playing has increased hugely. This piano is a family heirloom, with a wonderful story behind it. Now, learning more details about how well it was built, I am appreciating it even more! I will continue to have Sweet Sound tune my piano in the future.

Jim was very knowledgeable and professional. We were able to schedule a tuning as well as some major maintenance and it was done within two weeks. Our piano had been neglected for so long that it took multiple tunings to get it sounding great again. He knew exactly how to handle every little issue with the piano and we couldn’t be happier.

We had a great experience with Sweet Sound Piano. Jim explained the different options for my piano, which hadn't been serviced in a few years. I decided to have the felt redone on the hammers and was thrilled at how much better my piano sounded. I have never had a technician mention that option before and was previously disappointed after tunings when my piano still didn't sound good. But this time after Jim was finished it sounded amazing! We thought he was reasonably priced, he was willing to drive to Mountain House, and best of all he did a great job. We will definitely be calling them for our future tune-ups.

Piano Moving and Tuning: A Complete Solution

One of the most common questions we get after a move: “Does my piano need to be tuned now?”

The short answer is yes — and we can take care of that too.

Any move, no matter how carefully executed, introduces vibration and changes in temperature and humidity that affect string tension. The piano may sound fine immediately after, but within a few weeks the pitch will drift. We recommend waiting two to four weeks after the move before tuning, giving the instrument time to settle into its new environment.

Because Sweet Sound Piano handles both moving and tuning, you can schedule both services with one call. Our technicians already know your instrument from the move, which makes the tuning appointment more efficient. It’s the easiest way to close the loop on a piano relocation and know your instrument is performing at its best.

FAQ

Piano moving costs vary based on four main factors: piano type, distance, access conditions (stairs, elevators, long carries), and whether the move is local or long-distance. For most local moves in the Bay Area, upright piano moves run lower than grand piano moves, which require disassembly and more crew time. Piano removal and disposal, when needed, is priced separately. Contact us for a quote specific to your instrument and location.

Yes. We move all piano types, including upright pianos, console pianos, baby grands, full grand pianos, and concert grands. Grand piano moves require disassembly of the legs and pedal lyre, which our team handles as part of the standard move process.

We recommend booking at least one to two weeks in advance, especially for moves involving stairs, large instruments, or time-sensitive schedules. For urgent moves, contact us directly and we’ll do our best to accommodate.
